This subject hits home to me hard as I am trying to build something only to have it stolen while I am away from the property at work or out running around.

This will probably the most in depth off grid security tips you can possibly find on the internet.

Understand these things won't work in a grid down or SHTF scenario.

Scott why are you telling me these things... because when you have a place that screams I have stuff come take it then that is what they are exactly going to do.

These are things for when you are not home... when you receive unwanted guests. I have had my stuff stolen a couple of times. Why because I failed at making my target more harder then what it was worth. Nothing and I mean nothing just short of you at home is going to deter someone from coming in and that is if you are lucky.

The last thing you want  is your stuff growing legs and walking away. Here some ideas to help with security for your off-grid homestead / castle / shed... whatever.

Some are pretty common knowledge, some of these are actually meant for psychological intimidation purposes and some are meant for physical means. I like to say that I employ a lot of these tactics. My feeling is a man's place is his castle and when you invade that castle you are simply asking for trouble.

If you cross my fence line I want to make it as difficult and painfully unpleasant to try to get my things. All while getting you on video and responding armed. Just so you know I am pro 2nd Amendment 🔫. Before we get down to the DIY home security tips, it is important to know what your enemy — the burglars, thieves and crackheads.

Now let's look through the top things burglars won’t want you to know and you may conclude more best DIY home security tips from master burglars.

  • 60% burglars weigh the presence of your home security cameras systems and more than 40% would choose a softer target.
  • 90% convicted burglars would avoid targeting at your home if you have alarm systems installed.
  • Burglars like to break into homes during daytime hours when you and your family are away at work or school.
  • Trash cans, recycling bins, newspapers and an overgrown lawn are the signs a burglar will look for to tell whether your home is occupied.
  • Over 30% burglars entered a home through an unlocked door, window and other opening without force.
  • If you home has big fences and overgrown trees or bushes, burglars would prefer to use them as cover-up.
  • Burglars would knock on your front door before breaking in. If someone answers the door they will just come up with some bogus story..
  • Most burglars fear you might be home if they hear a radio or TV.
  • Burglars would go straight to the master bedroom and rarely go to a kid's bedroom.
  • Two things burglars hate most: your loud dogs and nosy neighbors.

Warning: Some ideas posted may be controversial maybe even offensive. It is completely your preference on how you decide to defend yourself and your property. I am only suggesting what other viewers have posted online already. I take no responsibility for your actions or results thereof.

I neither approve or condone any of the tactics or strategies you are welcome to your own opinion (I promise I won't be offended). Some of these tactics actually needs signage to convey to a trespasser that the hazard exists. Next to protecting your family there is nothing more important then keeping what's yours... yours!

These are a bunch of different ideas and in no particular order... if you happen to have a handful of these you're doing great. In a simple physical security application, layered security usually has four primary goals: deterrence, detection, delay, and response.

Deterrence.

The first layer of defense might be fence or gate or bright lighting which is intended to deter an intruder. This might be followed by a surveillance system that is designed to detect intruders. This could be coupled with locked or fortified doors designed to delay or slow down an intruder. Finally, an interior alarm system could be used to scare an intruder away and summons police or security officers.

I own a remote off-the-grid property in Arizona where timely law enforcement response is essentially non-existent. Even if police were notified of a break-in, they likely would not be able to respond for a good hour. This is just the reality of the location.

In my case I do not keep much of value at the location when I am not there (no generators, expensive tools, firearms, or anything else) but some of my remote neighbors do, and crooks know that. It is easy to boot in the front door and make off with a $1,000 portable generator or some expensive cordless tools or solar system components.

My first layer of defense is some large signs intended to deter intruders. I know that some burglars and assorted thieves cannot comprehend well, so the signs go on to say that the cabin is protected by surveillance cameras that are routing video to a remote server via the Internet.  I have installed realistic surveillance cameras and trail cameras that are easy to see (decoys) . I have even gone so far as installing an old satellite dish on the roof to give the illusion of an Internet based surveillance system.

Detection.

In addition to the fake surveillance cameras, I installed battery operated wildlife tracking cameras that will take photos of anyone approaching my property. These were strategically placed in an attempt to detect intruders. An intruder who realizes that the cameras have just snapped photos of them might be inclined to try and steal them and thus steal the evidence so I camouflaged these cameras to avoid detection and placed them high enough to prevent an intruder from easily stealing them.

As another security layer designed to deter trespassers, I installed solar powered motion flood lights around the cabin and property. These are not the dim solar lights you can buy at the big box stores. I spent the money to get the most powerful solar flood lights that I could find. Even here in cloudy Arizona the solar panels get enough sunlight to provide for a bright flood of light when anyone gets close to the cabin. In keeping with my previous article: Outdoor Security Lighting,

Delay.

To deter and delay a burglar from breaking in, I “hardened” all entry points (doors & windows). Even though we do not have hurricanes in this neck of the woods, I put wooden shutters  over my windows. They look decent and can be easily taken off when I am at the cabin. They are not impenetrable but provide a reasonably strong cover over the windows. A would-be intruder would have to have some tools or expend time and effort to pry they off.

I also going to place a hinged plywood door over the front cabin door and secured it with a padlock. I painted it the same color of the cabin so it blends in and does not give the appearance of the front door being boarded up.

When I am using the cabin, I can detach the plywood door cover in less than five minutes. Could a burglar cut the padlock or pry the plywood off? Sure, they could. But this would take some tools, time, and effort. All security measures can be defeated by a determined crook, but “hardening” my windows and door was a reasonable, cost effective, and aesthetically acceptable way to deter and delay an intruder.

Response.

As mentioned, a prompt law enforcement response in my remote location is not going to happen.  But, unless the intruders wear some kind of disguise, the photos from my cameras should give law enforcement some viable leads to follow-up on.

But, if intruders manage to breach my layers of security and enter my humble cabin they will face an additional layer of security designed to repel them from the property...

If an intruder is not deterred by my layered security measures and manage to defeat all of my layers of security, the intruder will be sorely disappointed. Like the sign says, all they will find inside is some old furniture, some Dollar Store pots & fry pans, some canned food, and a few bargain-basement fishing poles.

SIGNS POSTED ... ON ALL SIDES ... OFTEN

I know the simplest is the most often overlooked... this is critical because people need to be literally told that you don't want them on your property you have to state it... It's impossible to prove a trespassing conviction without posting signage.

Post a sign every 50' feet and even then expect them not to follow this simple request.

If law enforcement rolls up you need to make sure you have signs posted otherwise they might enter without a warrant.

PURPLE PAINT LAW

22 states recognize this law in other states it is ORANGE.  The PURPLE PAINT Law that works just like a fence but is exactly like a boundary line. Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. This means that landowners could indicate that their land is off-limits if they paint the trunks of trees near the perimeter of their property purple.

THE FRONT GATE OUTER PERIMETER

SothernPrepper1 (YouTube)

Notice you have wire to keep from jumping over as well as barb wire across the front gate. What does your front gate give a first impression and say about you? Do you make is like a bold statement or more subtle?

Make sure you put your no trespassing signs on it and make sure that you put some screen on the outside front so they cannot simply put their foot and jump over it (barb wire at the top is optional)Just make sure it has a lock on it at all times more about that later

DON'T ENTER VEHICLE DAMAGE MAY OCCUR

SothernPrepper1 (YouTube)

Vehicle Ramming Gate issues? Best offence is a strong defense. How to secure that front gate from being simply pushed open after the lock is cut?  If someone wanted to crash through your main gate... what could you do to slow it down? Well... how about a heavy solid telephone pole with some rebar stuck down in to hold it in place you want it so you can open your gate enough for a person to come through but not a vehicle... You can chain it to the post to make it hard to remove once in place.

OUTER PERIMETER FENCE

Yes, this is the most expensive investment you can make but worth it. It's worth it, in the end, remember to put your no trespassing signs every 50' feet or so...

Its meant as a deterrent form the wandering off-roaders or that pesky mailman but won't stop a determined thief. Remember to make it as animal friendly as wildlife may have a hard time getting over it become entangled and die.

You can reuse a combination of recycled materials off Craigslist. Don't wait until a end of the world moment to build your fence. Make those pole extensions to give your fence a couple more feet.

PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY LINE

SothernPrepper1 (Youtube)

Your fence needs to be guarded 24 - 7 in a worst case disaster don't forget you will need firing positions that have unobstructed view as well. Yes... Shifts cameras are down no internet no cell service just you and your eyeballs watching and waiting. This is kind of hard to do if you are by yourself.

AREA DENIAL SPACE DEVICES

Get some survey spikes and put them behind trees next to your structure or a old garden hose and some nails through it this will make a person less likely to dive behind trees to use as cover next to your house or structure.

FENCE SPIKES

Plastic like these will crack and break after a short time in the sun get the metal ones!

You can also go the opposite way employ metal ones as well in some countries they employ broken glass on top of block walls. You can pound nails in and take a angle grinder and sheer off the heads.

 INNER PERIMETER FRONT GATE

SothernPrepper1 (Youtube)
So they made it through the primary front gate now they are at your second secondary gate to (your inner perimeter) ... how elaborate do you want it?

Either way, they definitely at this point know for sure they are trespassing.

At this point have them on the other end of my scope waiting for them to jump this fence.

A final warning sign is there to greet them...

(as soon as they breach this initial fence I consider them a credible threat)

INNER PERIMETER FENCE

This is the fence within your fence your "final stand" fence so put wire mesh up to make it hard to climb and make it as elaborate as you want it.

If someone makes it this far they really know they are not supposed to be here since they will have already gone through the first fence that has the "No Trespassing" sings. They know they are in a place that they should not be so here is my final sign to them

ANTI CLIMB PAINT

Just apply to the top foot of a fence and post or chain link

Like climbing trees, climbing fences isn’t very difficult for burglars, particularly chain-link fences.
Anti-climb paint continues to work in hot or cold weather conditions, adhering to the surfaces to which it is applied.
It can be used on most building materials.

It is particularly effective in preventing climbing on walls, parapets, boundary fences, down pipes, lamps and roofs. It can get expensive about $100 dollars a gallon

SHOCK OF YOUR LIFE

You can go to your farm and feed store and get a solar powered electric animal fence. I have seen them cover up to 15 miles! I will definitely be putting this on the top rail of my fence. If you do I would definitely put up a sign... but as we know people can't read..

END OF THE ROAD

So you got a piece of land now and now and you begin seeing ATV's, Motorcycles and 4x4's that have been crossing your property on the backside probably for the last decade or more. It's up to you to decide how far you want to take it from people entering your private property signs help but you might have to kick it up a notch.

Put up immovable debris to direct off-roaders into a different path than the one that they are doing (through your property).

I know people that chain logs together but these can be removed by a chainsaw... best to get boulders moved by a tractor.

YOUR HOME REALLY IS YOUR CASTLE

You will not stop anyone when you are not physically there you want to make it so difficult that someone would not want to take the effort to go onto your property in the first place.
Think of the outer wall is your barb wire fence your first line of defense with signs posted. Then the inner wall is harder to get into the fence and all the good stuff is inside that inner fence (wall). The sensor lights are the inner guard towers, dogs ect.
This is called "Layered Security" and it makes use of everything to make it difficult for someone to trespass onto your property. Think about putting the structures with the backs to the outside put the most valuable buildings in the middle. All the building inside are locked and or barricaded.

DEFENSIBLE SPACE

You need to cut back the surrounding land from your house that could be used as a means of cover for the bad guys. It's also important to have a defensible space around your property in case of fire

DEFENSIVE PLANTS

In some countries, they defend themselves from wild animal attacks and other humans by using sharp thorny bushes (living fence). As I mentioned above, placement is imperative when planting for home security.

The Osage Orange Tree makes an excellent perimeter tree. Creating a fast-growing hedgerow, the Osage Orange will be your first line of defense.

Plant your home security plants below every window (making sure the residents still have a safe escape in case of emergency) and by every point of entry.

The climbing roses and berry bushes will do an excellent job of protecting you when planted below upper-level windows.

And finally, Spanish Daggers mixed with Century Plants make the perfect home security hedge closer to the home.

Add aesthetics and security to your home with the protection that only nature can provide. No one will ever know you have a secret fortress.

Here are 6 Defensive plants to consider

#1- Century Plants (Agave Americana)

Some plants can provide an extra “layer” for extreme home security.

Commonly called a Century Plant or Sentry Plant, unlike its name suggest, it typically only lives 10-30 years. This home security plant has firm green leaves that grow 3-5 ft long with massive spikes and a tip that can easily pierce the skin.

The Century Plant thrives in drought conditions and spreads freely. The leaves are pale green and look beautiful in landscaping. Virtually disease free, this plant is easy to grow and maintain.

#2- Spanish Dagger (Yucca Gloriosa)

The Spanish Dagger is another evergreen that is easy to grow in warm climates. The long, stiff pointy leaves make this the perfect plant for home security.

When we were planning our home security garden, a friend recommended the Spanish Dagger. All we did was took a machete to the stalk of the plant, pulled back a couple of the leaves and we stuck it in the ground. Within no time, we had a real home security defense garden. As they grow tall, their weight will make them fall over, and then they will root and spread.

Often a focal point in tropical gardens, the Spanish Dagger is visually pleasing and a deterrent to trespassers.

#3- Osage Orange Tree (Maclura Pomifera)

When I asked my fellow homesteading friends about plant security, many of them recommended the Osage Orange Tree. Osage Orange is a fast-growing tree that was used in place of barbed wire during the early 19th century.

The Osage Orange Tree produces a strong timber that resists rot and outlasts most lumber. Outside of its ability to grow fast, this unique tree produces many sharp, steel strong thorns that make it the perfect tree for home security.

#4- Rose Bushes

“A rose is a rose” indeed, but every rose has a thorn, And a rose bush is an excellent plant for home security when placed in the right location. The woody, thorny branches offer a painful sting which can spread disease and infection.

From miniature to climbing, roses grow in almost any climate which makes them the ideal plant for home security.

#5- Berry Bushes

How about a home security system that feeds you? Now you won’t see ADT making that claim! Many berry plants like gooseberries, blackberries, and raspberries all produce delicious fruit that are high in antioxidants, but more importantly– thorns.

Berries are fast growing and hardy to zone 3. From trellising to hedgerow, berries can be incorporated into any landscape and may be used for both home security and food.

#6- Citrus Trees

Another home security tree that has the added benefit of food are citrus trees. Several lemons, lime, orange, and grapefruit trees produce thorns along their trunks, branches, and twigs. There will be several citrus trees on our property, and the thorns are like no other. We have them planted below our bedroom windows with plenty of room to grow.

I chose this place for two reasons. One, for security. Anyone not knowing about the 3″ long, piercing thorns are in for a treat if they try to enter through our windows. Two, our house provides our citrus trees with radiant heat which helps them thrive.

Some others to consider

  • Acacia, Fabaceae
  • Blackberry, Rosaceae
  • Crown of thorns, Euphorbia
  • Honey locust, Gleditsia
  • Oregon grape, Mahonia
  • Porcupine tomato, Solanum
  • Bougainvillea, Nyctaginaceae

LANDSCAPE FOR SECURITY

You can control the environment outside. Put noisy gravel around the perimeter of your cabin / house that makes it impossible to walk without the "crunch" of gravel.

LOCK YOUR GATES... ALWAYS

You need to lock all your gate(s) at all times if you don't people will see it's not locked and know the time when you are not home. Put your lock and twist the chain on the inside to give the appearance you are home.
You don't want anyone just showing up at your front door. Locks on every entry gate to the property every time Tired of keys use combo locks not the spin locks in High school but the 4 digit thick

Master Lock kind. If you want to use a key lock I recommend one of those that you can mount to a fence post and can be accessed by only those with the code.

LOCKS ON THE TRAILER

As stated above locks everywhere on everything that is not inside a building. Trailer theft happens more then you know someone cuts the lock on your gate backs up with a truck and away goes your trailer. Also take the tires off and hide them or lock up the tires with a chain. Remember a determined thief will get to what you have but they want a quick easy in and out... don't let that happen.

WORKBOOTS ON THE PORCH

Whhhaaattt? Remember It's all about appearances you want to have the appearance that you could return at any moment. You could be possibly inside with your shoes off. Go buy some boots at the local thrift store and set them out

FRONT DOOR SAFETY

So this is one of the weakest part of the structure allowing that person to come in.
Re-enforce by adding extra bite to all door frames use 4"inch screws (drill pilot holes) and replace all door hinges and then replace the deadbolt the smaller screws that go deep into the frame. Consider also getting a upgrade to the strike plate as well...

REVERSE MOUNT FRONT DOOR

Another thing to consider is that its harder to kick in the front door if you change the hardware around to make the door swing out instead of in. Unless you are building your structure to building codes.

BEHIND DOOR NUMBER ONE IS DOOR NUMBER TWO

So what's better then one door? How about two of them. A outer door that has a deadbolt on the outside will be imposing enough. What's behind door number one? Surprise how about door number two. (notice the two locks on the outside of the frame)

SECURITY FILM

Security Window Film designed to slow or prevent entry from a burglar. If the glass is broken the film will hold the window together preventing or delaying a thief from easily entering your home.
Thief's number one asset is time and the film takes that asset away.

The 12mil security window film is great for store fronts or areas of high concern. If someone attempts to gain entry into the building this film slows them or stops them in their tracks. Excellent UV rejection 90% VLT, virtually clear, blocks 99% of UV rays.

KEYS IN THE BOX

Do you have a lot of keys or ones to the quad or other vehicles? Don't put them hanging on a keychain rack by the front door where would be thieves can simply get what they want and unlock things on your property. Put them in a tin box on a shelf with a bunch of other junk only you know which box is important.

LOCKUP FROM THE OUTSIDE

So you got a deadbolt but you are leaving for a month lock the front door with a sliding lock that goes into the 2 X 8 stud itself. You can put your deadbolt cut resistant lock on it and feel semi-comfortable that someone is not going to walk away easily with it.

SHED SECURITY

So you have a shed out back it would be worth it to have a bar going across the door and pad lock. I have seen bed rails (angle iron) work great for this purpose.

LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE

Lights are a great deterrent and are helpful when you hear that noise outside at 3 AM.

Put one on every side of your house/sheds/outbuilding even at the front driveway post next to the locked gate(s) spray paint them to blend in or to stick out for added UV protection (the sun makes plastic brittle over time and space them out as your silent guard towers. This is the single best thing you can do for your property.

CCTV SOLAR SECURITY CAMERAS ( Real and Dummy)

Some of these have lights and these cameras by Reolink has a great line of cameras that have sensors on them....

It is reported that 60% burglars would avoid properties with a security camera on-site.
With technology comes great advances in cameras. It is possible to have a off grid camera system that you can see anytime from anywhere practically.

You can view your camera anytime from your smartphone. Check this out  be forewarned after purchasing the equipment you will have to buy a data plan from a cellular carrier or affiliate carrier.  I utilize this and I have caught trespassers on my land and called the local sheriff while responding out to the property always armed! I have dummy cameras that are easy to spot its the cameras that you don't see that catch you.

SENSORS GIVE YOU THAT "HEADS UP"

You can get creative with these spray-paint them to look like the surroundings put them on trees/posts point them cover certain areas.  Know who coming down the road before they get to your locked gate...Have a shed that should not be opened put one inside when the door opens a sound will go off sounding next to you when you are sleeping. They even have solar models that can alert you from your home when someone is coming up the driveway.

STICKERS THAT PLAY MIND GAMES

Slap this on the window of your cabin. What's your impression what's your impression when you see a bumper sticker on someone car (like this)? Slap one of these or a U.S Marine alongside an NRA sticker on the outside of your window.

Forget "Protected by ADT" I rather go with "Protected by 357" personally. If they can see this sticker they are already on your property and looking around.

I know if they are close enough to see this in a window they are on my property.

FLY YOUR FLAG

Just like the stickers have the effect go ahead and fly YOUR flag American, POW, Marine, Jolly Roger, Gadsden or Confederate this can add the finishing touch to "DON'T F*CK WITH ME" with whatever flag is in the window.

What is your first impression when you see this flag? Exactly, it means something completely different to everyone else. The fact is that it makes you think the following question. "What kind of person lives here??? "

Better question the would-be intruder  "Who am I messing with?"

USE OF THE HA HA WALL

This is the best anti-vehicle barrier its great because there is no way the vehicle can scale over the barrier. Unless they use a tank of course. It allows a deterrent and at the same time you can see over it.

USE YOUR SECOND AMENDMENT

If you are out in the middle of nowhere and things go bad and it can take a long time for the police to come. Have a shotgun for security and one for hunting ideal choice would be a (22. cal for small game 30-30 cal. and up for the larger game). Always have a backup handgun...  in the outdoor shower, bathroom every structure has a firearm hidden of course.

There is a reason this country was founded on guns for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Remember to always lock up your firearms in lock boxes or safes.

If you are not going to occupy your property full time you might want to take your firearms with you in case of a break in. ABA (Always Buy Ammo) Every paycheck get a box of all types even if you don't own you can barter or trade later.

TRAIL CAMERAS (EVERYWHERE)

 Retail $ 130.00

SPECIAL PROMOTION

I can offer you a special reward on select SPYPOINT cameras once you sign up but I need to give you a special code contact me at
inbetweenranchaz@gmail.com  you will receive a email from me back with easy to follow instructions.

* Only LINK-MICRO-LTE, LINK-MICRO-S, LINK-S, LINK-EVO, or LINK-DARK cameras are eligible for the referral program. The SPYPOINT FLEX Series, LM2, CELL-LINK, and pre-owned cameras are not eligible for this program.

In addition to the sensors if you want to know who or what is messing with your stuff or coming around when your not you can post one in an obvious place and that is a "giveaway".

Have a hidden trail camera to capture people that park in front of your driveway or do drive by's to scout a property

I would have had a security light with motion sensor on the front with the solar panel on the roof and keep out signs (just saying)

Remember it's the ones you don't see I would make this my broken dummy camera the real camera is hidden and will catch those thieves that vandalize or steal the dummy ones.

TRAIL CAMS WORK! You can see who or what has visited your property manufactures such as Apeman or Spypoint on Amazon is a good start

Be sure that others are hidden once they know they are on camera hopefully that will deter people from being on camera they see it and move on and a few that are hidden on posts then in various places.

When mounting your camera for stealth do not use the fabric strap it comes with use tie wire... also either mount really high or really low as people are trained to look at eye level...

Another tip you could put a trail camera into a bird house and set it out.

SHIPPING CONTAINER EXTRA SECURITY

So you won't have a shipping container on my property to secure some of the high ticket items be sure to have a cover welded over the top of the lock so it makes it harder for someone to come along with bolt cutters. Don't forget to post that Keep Out sign on the front.

LOCK UP THAT LADDER

If you don't have a shipping container or shed then lock the ladder or chain it up.  That makes an easy way to get access to things that thieves should not be getting access to a second story window maybe solar panels. Don't give the trespasser's the opportunity. Make sure your ladders, pry bars, big screwdrivers, hammers and the like are chained and placed properly where they should be.

This easy home security tip can prevent the tools falling into the wrong hands of burglars and being used against you as burglar tools.

HOMEMADE SPIKE STRIPS

For people that like to go through locked gates and for those and that like to come on your property and steal things you can defend what is yours by leaving something behind for when you are away for days or weeks at a time. Just remember you left it out and not to drive over it yourself.

Abatis are rarely seen nowadays, having been largely replaced by wire obstacles. However, it may be used as a replacement or supplement when barbed wire is in short supply

I can pretty much guarantee if you don't come through the front gate you are getting your tires punctured maybe more....Suggest 4" inch #10 rust-resistant screws and grid down the point with a grinder and space 3 in apart spray-paint and bury with some leaves or debris. Just don't forget you left them out when you drive back on your property.

On my property if you are not supposed to be there and you happen to step on a nail then that's your fault I was thinking more of the traps used in the Vietnam war of course you can be sued for that as well.

DIY HOMEMADE SPIKE STRIPS

You may have gate crashers here is a way to take out their tires. A garden hose that has spikes in it with a string at the end just drag it across the road.

ROLL OUT THE UN-WELCOME MAT

Can you be more clear to the would-be intruder that is standing at your front door with the crowbar? This will help out with identifying that you may "expect" unwelcome company just don't put the spare key underneath it... if they are reading this they are on your doorstep.

A ROOM WITH TWO DOORS

You can make this a mud room, laundry room, whatever the point. You have a double door if they were able to get through the front door by now the alarm is sounding. Once they are faced with a second locked door that leads into the house. Hopefully, they are frustrated at this point and will leave.

BAR THE ENTRY DOOR WHEN YOUR HOME WHEN ZOMBIES COME

Unless you have a battering ram you are not going to get in quick enough before I am going through my escape tunnel, this is great for the Zombie horde that is pushing at your door. You can use this for exterior doors or even interior however make interior doors solid core or you could end up like below.

YOU NEED A BETTER DOOR

One of the TOP off-grid security tips is to secure the door of your cabins, sheds, farm houses, etc. as 34% of burglars enter through the front door.

Be sure to use deadbolts on every exterior door in addition to the handle locking mechanism. Each deadbolt should be a Class 2 (rated the best for residential use) and the throw bolt should be at least one inch in length. Make sure your outside door is metal or a really good solid security door that goes for all interior doors inside the house. When put a hollow core in your structure is like putting a deadbolt on a screen door.

Put keyed locks on all interior doors (that should be solid core)  especially those leading to the pantry. Remember each door is a line of defense. Secure you door with multiple locks this is annoying at best but will slow down or stop the would be offender.

SECURITY SCREENS AFTER THEY TRY THE DOOR

So you want to make some custom screens for your windows that custom fit and screw into the frame you can put these on the window frame on the inside
. Use these in conjunction with the Zombie Shutters.

WINDOW LOCKS

So you want an easy way to keep the people out from going through your windows. Instead of making security screens you could go the cheaper route and put a screw through the frame.

Go to the local hardware store and install slider thumb locks that screw right to the sliding channel of the window.

WINDOW ALARMS

This is the most simple yet effective set them and forget them...criminals look at window frames to see if they are alarmed. Get those cheap window alarms that go off when triggered and a window sticker on the outside is worth its weight

WINDOW STICKER

Spend the extra money to get a "Name Brand" Security system decal as well as the yard signs...I personally have a gun sticker lol.  If the trespasser or thief is at your window by now they have had to go through a lot in order to cross your property line.

THE FAKE BARKING DOG

Apparently you have the option of going dogless.... There are alarm boxes that will sense when a intruder is at your door and make a loud barking sound. Google "dog bark alarm"

I would put a "Beware of Dog" sign out front a dog bowl  and also a doghouse to the side of the building to keep up appearances.

 FAKE TV LIGHT

Much like the fake barking dog there is a Fake TV as well.

If your house looks like someone is home watching tv they would be inclined to keep going to the next unoccupied home.

WINDOW COVERINGS (TINT)

I know it should be common knowledge but have a way to keep people from seeing into a window you. A burglary happens in the United States every 13 seconds.
If someone is on your front porch don't allow them the opportunity to look in. You can get standard metal horizontal blinds (do not get plastic) they will melt in high in the high heat of the sun.

You can see how tint does not allow someone to see in very well This  film covers the whole window allowing only light through. You can go for a film or window tint that goes over the window itself and obscures vision many different styles are available... think of it as window tint. It also comes in a spray can as well.

GARAGE DOOR

Keep the Garage door shut at all times you don't want anyone to see anything at any time. If it is attached most of the time the least secure door is the one leading from the house to the Garage.
If you are going to be away for any length of time install the locks on the inside of the garage door itself.

You can put a regular C Clamp on the track on the inside that makes it impossible for the door to roll up.

Those little windows at the top you might want to put some film across it or something to keep would-be thieves from looking in and seeing what's inside (personally I would not have windows in mine)

ZOMBIE SHUTTERS

SothernPrepper1 (Youtube)

A long time ago houses use to have shutters to keep out the elements.  We now can have the added benefit of putting in with a couple of hinges and some trimmed wood some good looking shutters. You can put a lock on the outside or from the inside and they accordion back and is held in place with a simple wood branch latch.

THE LIGHTS ON...BUT NOBODY IS HOME

Wouldn't it be great to have a off  grid system where you have a light inside the home  that is powered by solar and is on a timer so it could go on and off a couple every night or other night.
Get a solar light kit hook it up to a chicken timer powered by a 12 volt battery (connected to a solar battery charger)

There are some lights that are self-contained and would do the trick nicely.  All automated even if you are not there. If you have power hooked up and have normal power operation you can opt to use a regular timer.

HOME ALARM ADAPTED TO OFF GRID

Another off the grid application is you can get monthly monitoring from SimpliSafe System that uses cellular technology and a phone app that can notify you when sensors are triggered. Place one inside the cabin wire it to a solar panel and you have yourself a off grid security system. I personally have this I did a in depth post here.

KUJO ANYONE?

So many people say get a dog... while this is the best option so for people that do not stay at their property full time this can cause a problem...

Dogs are a great deterrent and protector for your property.

Do your research different breeds are better then others look into what works best for you. You could try to put this on your fence if you do not technically have a dog but it will keep out the wanna be's. If you do a dog dish outside with a doghouse with the words killer...LOL

Remember not all dogs are created equal some of the best breeds you can have are (in no particular order)

  • Bullmastiff
  • Doberman Pinscher
  • Rhodesian Ridgeback
  • Puli
  • Kuvasz
  • Komondor
  • Giant Schnauzer
  • German Shepherd
  • Rottweiler
  • Staffordshire Terrier

ENGRAVE EVERY ITEM ON YOUR PROPERTY

Anything of value is worth putting your name on it and take a picture at least you can show the police come and say what did it look like you can say here is a photo of it and I etched my Name and Number on it... record the serial numbers as well.

You can use a permanent black light marker
Take a picture of your items especially for insurance purposes. It would be worth if you are going to have valuables at the location then you should have insurance as well.

SNARE TRAPS

Not only is this good for catching rabbits and small game it is also good for ensnaring would be thieves on the property.

This could cause minor to severe pain (depending on size of trap). Keep in mind, you must check with your local ordinances to find out if traps are allowed to be set up around your property.

You likely must post warnings that they are there or else you may be exposed to legal liability–even by someone otherwise breaking the law.

ALARM YOUR OUTBUILDINGS

Ok they cut the lock and entered your shed now imagine they are faced with a 110 sounding decibel siren the whole time the alarm is going off outside and also inside the shed not to mention that there is a strobe light going off on an elevated pole all this sounding a set time, however, the strobe light will keep flashing until the system shuts off with a key or goes dead.
I am going to make these guys work for it so when they enter the shed they are going to see a chain around the generator and running to

Now imagine you have a 12-volt battery that has a charge controller and solar going to it... I found the perfect shed alarm here

SECURE YOUR MAIL

Lets see those varmints hit this If you happen to be on a dirt road and its constantly getting knocked over time to employ some security. I don't have a mailbox on my road so I go into town to the local postal service called Bob's mail and more and I get all my mail there.

It's $20 bucks a month but I get all my mail and packages delivered and secured. The best part is I have the option of forwarding all my mail at any time to anyplace.

FAKE SATELLITE DISH

Possible cable network or perhaps or possible internet connection? You can pick one of these maybe from the old service you used to have. Make sure you get rid of the lettering on the dish so it looks like you have service

HIDE YOUR STUFF

Just about anything you have acquired for post-catastrophic survival makes you a target for attack. Machinery, vehicles, tools, even your garden make you more susceptible to possible assault. Try to keep your possessions hidden from plain view whenever possible. Fences work but make it pretty obvious that you are attempting to hide something. Instead, consider using natural ways to obscure your possessions like trees and bushes

GETTING A SAFE IN YOUR HOME

This is a great DIY home security tip and great for keeping your valuables secure from burglars as well as fires. Depending on the size of the safe and what you're going to protect, you can hide the safe in the wall, under the bed or somewhere that is not easily accessible to the burglars. The absolute worst place to keep your safe is in the garage, which is at a high risk for burglary.

HIDE YOUR BELONGINGS IN THE GROUND

Ammo, food, valuables, antibiotics, anything of value that people at your property would want to take from you...put in in a pvc tube and bury it.

OPSEC

Keep in a low profile if you are away for a vacation. It is much easier than you think for the burglars to find your place, so broadcasting your updates on the social media is equal to inviting the burglars to your home.

A feasible DIY home security tip you can employ is to share your experience until you come back home. The military employs OPSEC (Operations Security) and employs the process of not posting critical information on social media.

LOOSE LIPS...

This is my weakness and something I will commit to stopping RIGHT NOW!  In my effort to spread the word about family preparedness, I talk about my own efforts, what I have, how I am storing it, and worst of all, where I have located my stuff.  Shame on me.  What I have effectively done is advertise the fact that if the SHTF, you can come to my place because I have food, I have water, I have stuff.  This is going to be difficult because I do want to educate and help others.  But I am going to really try to be a bit more private going forward.

KNOW THY NEIGHBOR

You should make them your allies. "Keep your friends close" adage comes to mind.
What's the mindset or attitude of the people that are living around you. They can keep an eye on the traffic or people that come up the road... help each other out after all your all alone out there by yourselves. Wouldn't it make sense to have the closest human being to you on your side until of course until you

What do you think of these methods? Get any ideas how about leaving an idea or two yourself... thanks.
